Thursday’s PFL 5 card from Nassau Coliseum will go a long way toward shaking out the traffic jam in the Professional Fighters League lightweight division. The division itself offers an intriguing mix of veteran fighters looking for redemption and lesser-known prospects taking a significant step up in opposition. The former group includes such notables as 18-fight Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Thiago Tavares, The Ultimate Fighter Season 8 winner Efrain Escudero and former Bellator MMA lightweight champ Will Brooks.
One fighter who is likely just looking for a break of any kind is Jason High, after enduring another referee-related career low point in his regular-season debut at PFL 2 in June. “The Kansas City Bandit,” who is probably best-known for being released from the UFC after shoving referee Kevin Mulhall in the immediate aftermath of his match with Rafael dos Anjos, lost to Escudero via technical submission in spite of not appearing to have tapped. In an additional layer of weirdness, Escudero failed to make weight for that fight, which is why he has zero points in these standings in spite of having won. With the late withdrawal of fellow UFC veteran Brian Foster, High now headlines this event against Brazil’s Natan Schulte.
The PFL regular season will continue to run through August, with the playoffs scheduled to begin in October.
