Blachowicz has won six of his past seven bouts. The 39-year-old last appeared at UFC on ESPN 36, where he was awarded a technical knockout over Aleksandar Rakic after the Austrian contender suffered a knee injury in the third round of their May 14 confrontation. Blachowicz held the undisputed light heavyweight crown previously, from Sept. 26, 2020 to Oct. 30, 2021.
Ankalaev, 30, enters the Octagon on the strength of a nine-fight winning streak. The sambo practitioner last competed on July 30, when he put away Anthony Smith with punches in the second round of their UFC 277 showcase. Ankalaev has delivered more than half (nine) of his 17 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission.
