Just call him Mr. UFC on Fox.
The resounding finish left the pro-Team Alpha Male crowd at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento in shock, especially after Urijah Faber’s submission of Michael McDonald in the co-main event had the throng in a state of ecstasy just a few moments earlier. Normally, a flyweight bout virtually guarantees 25 minutes of facts and figures. Not this time. Tonight was about Johnson’s continued emergence as a dominant flyweight champion. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC on Fox 9, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com.
2:08: Official time of Johnson’s first-round knockout of Benavidez in the flyweight headliner, making it the fastest KO in the brief history of the division inside the Octagon.
3-0: Record for Johnson in UFC on Fox events in 2013. “Mighty Mouse” outpointed John Dodson at UFC on Fox 6, submitted John Moraga at UFC on Fox 8 and knocked out Joseph Benavidez at UFC on Fox 9.
21:35: Difference in time between Johnson’s last title defense, a submission of John Moraga 3:43 into the fifth round at UFC on Fox 8, and Saturday’s stoppage of Benavidez. Johnson’s first seven UFC appearances all went to the judges.
11: Combined significant strikes landed by Johnson (7) and Benavidez (4). In their first meeting at UFC 152, the duo combined to land 121 significant strikes in a bout “Mighty Mouse” won via split decision.
2,352: Days since the UFC last held an event in Sacramento. At UFC 73 “Stacked,” which was held at the Arco Arena, Anderson Silva defended his middleweight strap with a first-round stoppage of Nate Marquardt in the evening’s headliner.
145.4: Average weight of the 22 competitors on Saturday’s card. UFC on Fox 9 featured just one welterweight bout (Court McGee vs. Ryan LaFlare) and nothing higher than that. According to MMADecisions.com, that makes it the lightest average weight for a card in UFC history. The previous record was 146.25 pounds -- the average of “The Ultimate Fighter 14” finale.
11: Career submission victories for Urijah Faber, which is the most in modern UFC/WEC history. “The California Kid” tapped out Michael McDonald with a guillotine choke 3:22 into the second round of their bantamweight tilt.
110: Total strikes landed by Nik Lentz, who dropped a unanimous decision against Chad Mendes at featherweight. Lentz outlanded his opponent by at least 15 strikes in all three rounds.
7: Takedowns landed, in 10 attempts, by Mendes, the second most of his UFC/WEC career. The Team Alpha Male standout landed a career-best eight takedowns in a three-round triumph over Cub Swanson at WEC 50.
.043: Percentage of Joe Lauzon’s 23 professional victories that have gone the distance after he outpointed Mac Danzig in their lightweight showdown. The Bridgewater, Mass., native had finished each of his previous 22 wins -- 18 by submission and four by knockout or technical knockout. Lauzon is now 1-3 in bouts that go to the judges.
26: Career submission attempts by Lauzon, the third most of any fighter in UFC history. “J-Lau” attempted two submissions against Danzig to surpass Joe Stevenson, who has 24, on Saturday night. Chris Lytle is first with 31 submission attempts.
80: Significant strikes landed by Bobby Green in a unanimous verdict over Pat Healy at lightweight. By comparison, Healy landed 59 significant strikes. However, “Bam Bam” did have a 105-to-93 edge in total strikes.
36: Significant strikes by which Danny Castillo outlanded Edson Barboza in the opening round of their 155-pound conflict.
24: Significant strike advantage for Barboza over the final two rounds. The Ricardo Almeida Jiu-Jitsu product outlanded Castillo 22 to 5 in round two and 16 to 9 in round three to capture a majority decision.
6: Takedowns landed, in 17 attempts, by Zach Makovsky in his unanimous decision victory over flyweight debutante Scott Jorgensen. That figure matches the most takedowns anyone has landed against “Young Guns” in UFC/WEC competition. Dominick Cruz also landed six takedowns vs. Jorgensen at WEC 53.
965: Significant strikes landed by Sam Stout during his UFC career. “Hands of Stone” landed 54 significant strikes in a three-round verdict over Cody McKenzie, moving past Michael Bisping into second place on the promotion’s all-time list for significant strikes landed. Georges St. Pierre is first with 1,254.
34: Significant strikes by which Abel Trujillo outlanded Roger Bowling in their lightweight rematch. Trujillo landed 43 of his 64 significant strikes, a 67 percent success rate, en route to a TKO triumph 1:35 into round two. In their previous meeting, which resulted in a no contest 4:57 into round two, Trujillo held a 50-to-43 advantage in significant strikes.
6,636: Distance in miles from Alptekin Ozkilic’s hometown of Istanbul, Turkey, to Sacramento, Calif., where he made his Octagon debut at UFC on Fox 9. Ozkilic took a split decision over Darren Uyenoyama in the evening’s opening preliminary bout.
