Raphael Assuncao vs. Erik Koch
In the UFC’s 145-pound division, champion Jose Aldo is definitely in need of contenders who will be marketable as threats. After his defense against Mark Hominick on April 30, there is no guarantee of who gets next, and a strong performance here could help settle the argument if Koch wins.
Assuncao has to get this one to the ground, and quickly, as he gives up standup and six inches in reach to the rangy Koch. The Brazilian has shown some solid ground skills, even in defeats to Urijah Faber and Diego Nunes. Despite limited standup skills, Assuncao is not afraid to throw hands and exchange.
Koch, who trains with lightweight wunderkind Anthony Pettis, has improved with each fight. Here, he will have to incorporate a mix of sprawl-and-brawl tactics with striking variety on the feet.
The Pick: Koch has a lot of room to try things and find something that works. When it does, expect him to pounce en route to a third-round stoppage in a competitive fight.
