Smith and Eye duked it out for a full round, and it appeared as though an ordinary MMA fight had begun to unfold. Then a figurative bomb went off inside the Octagon.
Some 90 seconds into round two, Eye landed a powerful right hook to the side of Smith’s head. Though she had not been aiming for it, Eye’s fist connected on Smith’s ear, which was already misshapen due to cauliflower ear. Upon impact, Smith’s ear exploded, blood spewing forth into the air in a grotesque mist. Referee Herb Dean called for the stoppage soon after. It looked as if a barracuda had ripped out a chunk of flesh, as the cartilage dangled and flapped in the wind. Evander Holyfield had nothing on Smith.
