7. Jon Schorle Searches for a Mouthpiece While a Beating Occurs Behind His Back

When this all-time classic brutal knockout occurred, most people just watched “Razor” Rob McCullough drop Olaf Alfonso with a devastating right-handed bomb and then knock him completely unconscious with some follow-up grenades to the face. Arguably the most memorable thing about the knockout was when McCullough delivered that first punch that felled Alfonso and sent his mouthpiece flying across the cage.

However, the most fantastic element to this WEC wipeout was what referee Jon Schorle did after the initial right hand up until the point of when Schorle dove in to shove McCullough off of the virtually lifeless Guatemalan. Schorle was so focused on Alfonso’s mouthpiece that he ran around the side of the cage to retrieve it while McCullough began unloading missile after missile until Alfonso’s equilibrium was sent into orbit. The ref’s top job is to ensure safety, but during this obliteration, it seemed as though Schorle’s main objective was to find the mouthguard.
