5 Things You Might Not Know About Trevin Giles

Brian KnappOct 31, 2024

Back-to-back stoppage losses have Trevin Giles on thinner ice in the unforgiving Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight division.

Giles will try to get back on track when he travels to Canada to confront Mike Malott in a featured UFC Fight Night 246 attraction this Saturday at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. The 32-year-old San Antonio native has compiled a 7-6 record across his 13 assignments in the UFC, his run highlighted by victories over James Bochnovic, Antonio Braga Neto and Bevon Lewis. However, Giles finds himself on the rebound following consecutive defeats—one by submission, the other by knockout—to Gabriel Bonfim and Carlos Prates at UFC 291 and UFC Fight Night 236. He has never lost three fights in a row as a pro.

As Giles approaches his forthcoming clash with Malott at 170 pounds, here are five things you might not know about him.

1. He earned his stripes.

Giles entered the UFC as an undefeated 24-year-old prospect in 2017. He was a perfect 9-0 at the time, with wins over Brendan Allen, Isaac Villanueva and Ryan Spann. Giles won his first two bouts inside the Octagon to move to 11-0 before submitting to a Zak Cummings guillotine choke at UFC Fight Night 152.

2. A gold rush highlighted his rise through the regional ranks.

The Texan captured the Caribbean Ultimate Fist Fighting middleweight championship with a first-round technical knockout of Robert McCarthy at CUFF 10 on May 21, 2016 in Trinidad and Tobago. It was Giles’ first and only appearance with the organization.

3. Like-minded individuals form his inner circle.

Giles operates out of the War Training Center camp fronted by Richard Copley and Jeremy Mahon in Tomball, Texas, just outside of Houston. Anthony Ivy, Charlie Ontiveros, Zachary Reese and Joseph Holmes are among the other UFC alums who have called the gym home.

4. Judges favor his approach and skill set.

“The Problem” owns a 5-0 record in bouts that go the distance. That mark includes Giles’ split decisions over James Krause at UFC 247 and Preston Parsons at UFC on ESPN 43.

5. He always has a Plan B on which to fall back.

Giles graduate from Texas Southern University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He worked as a law enforcement officer for the Houston Police Department before retiring to pursue mixed martial arts on a full-time basis in 2022.
