Andrea Lee has established herself as one of the top women’s flyweight prospects in the sport. The former Legacy Fighting Championship and Legacy Fighting Alliance titleholder will make her Ultimate Fighting Championship debut when she tackles Veronica Macedo at UFC Fight Night 129 on Saturday in Santiago, Chile.
1. She played volleyball and competed in powerlifting in high school.
Lee has always been competitive, even at school. Before trading kicks and punches inside the cage, she played volleyball and competed in powerlifting. When she graduated from Queen City High School in Texas, she moved to the big city and worked as a waitress at a sports bar that showed MMA fights. She loved what she saw, decided to look for a trainer and got her hands in combat sports.
2. Boxing was her first taste of combat sports.
In her initial foray into fighting, Lee chose boxing. She wanted to compete as quickly as she could, and when she felt she was ready, she entered and won the Louisiana Golden Gloves tournament. She went on to win another Golden Gloves championship, as well as multiple titles in kickboxing, muay Thai and jiu-jitsu.
3. She grooves to country music, classic rock and metal.
It probably does not surprise anyone to hear Lee likes country music. However, she is also into classic rock and metal and has walked out to a library of awesome songs, including Megadeth’s “A Tout Le Monde” and “Symphony of Destruction.” At Invicta Fighting Championships 9, she drew cheers from the metalheads in attendance when she walked out to “Holy Diver” by the great Ronnie James Dio.
4. Dave Mustaine approves.
Lee got the surprise of her life when the Megadeth frontman tweeted her, thanking her for the “follow.” The two discussed options for her walkout music in one of her Legacy bouts.
5. Despite the nickname, she has no ties to Russia.
“KGB” is not trying to voice a political statement, nor does she have the slightest hint of Russian blood. She may look like a girl from Eastern Europe, but she is a true blue Southern belle. “KGB” was a name given to her by her coach, who said she looked Russian. In the Muay Thai World Championships, a Russian coach approached Lee’s trainer and asked if she was Russian because of the “KGB” patch on her muay Thai trunks. Lee won the championship, and the entire Russian team came to have its pictures taken with her.
