When Schrijber stood up, the bell rang to end the round as Matsui let go of the submission attempt and rolled over onto his hands and knees. As Matsui was about to get up, Schrijber inexplicably decided it was a good idea to deliver a blow after the bell. His weapon of choice: an illegal axe kick to Matsui’s brainstem.
The typically focused and reserved Pride crowd pelted Schrijber with raucous disapproval, and referee Keiji Shiozaki angrily disqualified the Dutchman. Fortunately, Matsui suffered no permanent damage. Schrijber retired in 2008 with a career record of 20-17-1, the lone disqualification a black eye on his resume.
