Preview: PFL 2 ‘Cappelozza vs. Austin’

Ferreira vs. Jones

Heavyweights

Renan Ferreira (8-0, 2-0 PFL) vs. Jamelle Jones (12-7, 1-1 PFL)

BETUS ODDS: Ferreira (-600), Jones (+400)

Ferreira’s 2021 will be best remembered for his controversial bout against Fabricio Werdum, which initially looked like a technical knockout victory but was eventually overturned when replays indicated that “Problema” tapped twice to a triangle choke moments earlier. To his credit, the 6-foot-8 Brazilian rebounded with impressive triumphs over Carl Seumanutafa and Stuart Austin in his next two PFL outings; however, he was not granted entry into the playoffs. With that in mind, the Team Nogueira product should be on a mission entering his second PFL campaign. Ferreira typically enjoys a height and reach advantage against most foes and can employ powerful straight punches, as well as a solid arsenal of kicks for a heavyweight. For those who are capable of taking him down, Ferreira is capable of throwing up submissions from his back, with his long limbs working as an asset with an active guard. Ferreira does tend to tire if he is unable to finish his opposition early, but that is not especially unusual for the heavyweight division. Jones seems like a matchup tailor-made for Ferreira. “The Beast” struggled mightily against the kicks of Bruno Henrique Cappelozza—to the legs in particular—in the 2021 PFL semifinals and often restored to diving into the clinch to negate his adversary’s striking advantage. If Jones is able to secure a takedown, he has showcased some powerful ground-and-pound, but that could be negated by an active submission attack. As someone who has competed at light heavyweight and had difficulty navigating reach disparity in the past, the path to victory outside of a Hail Mary knockout looks like a tall task for Jones. Ferreira picks Jones apart at range on his way to a knockout or technical knockout victory.
