The 24-year-old last appeared in March 2010, when he stopped Beau King on second-round punches on the regional circuit in California. Newell -- who suffered his only career defeat to unbeaten prospect Brandon Bender -- has trained under three-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Fabio Leopoldo.
