Ranking the PFL Fighters: Featherweights
Alex Gilpin
11. Alex Gilpin
Gilpin enters the competition riding high with seven straight wins. The 12-1 fighter is a veteran of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series and top regional organizations like the Resurrection Fighting Alliance and Absolute Championship Berkut. His only blemish on his record came at the hands of the UFC’s Dan Moret. The 27-year-old is a former Texas state high school wrestling champion who also competed at the Division I level. The Wisconsin native has fast entries on his takedowns and strong top control. In scrambles, he loves to attack the head with guillotines and anaconda chokes. On the feet, the DWTNCS alum works behind a stinging jab and powerful overhand right. He uses constant movement when choosing to attack and then slides out of range before being countered. He makes the mistake of only throwing single punches at a time instead of combinations and leaves his chin high in the air, a tendency which could lead his being hit with a big shot. Gilpin also hardly ever checks leg kicks. He is going to need his wrestling game to work for him, but with even more decorated wrestlers -- like opponent Lance Palmer -- his striking will need to be more developed for him to be viewed as a serious threat.
