Lightweights

NR | Mason Jones (10-1, 0-1 UFC) vs. NR | David Onama (8-0, 0-0 UFC)

ODDS: Jones (-600), Onama (+400)

Jones’ last fight was almost an impressive rebound win. A two-division titleholder in Cage Warriors Fighting Championship, the Welshman figured to be an entertaining addition to the UFC’s lightweight ranks. “The Dragon” lived up to that billing in his UFC debut to say the least, going to war against Mike Davis in January. That fight showed off the strengths of Jones’ game, as he is pathologically aggressive and seemingly able to eat whatever offense his opponent can throw his way. Jones absorbed an absolute beating but still managed to keep marching forward for the entirety of the fight. Of course, the bad news is that Jones lost the fight, but he showed a much more effective approach against Alan Patrick in his next bout, measuring his aggression as he got the ball rolling for what seemed like a sure victory. Then came an accidental eye poke, and with Patrick unable to continue, the fight was ruled a no contest. The initial plan was for the two to rematch here, but with Patrick out, Jones now faces Onama. The promotional newcomer will make history as the first fighter born in Uganda to compete in the UFC, and he is an interesting prospect, with his fast hands sticking out as the best part of his game. However, he is also a talent clearly coming to the UFC on the early side, as he has been able to get by on his gifts rather than any sort of clear approach. Onama should eventually find his footing in the promotion, but this is a difficult first test. Jones is by far the most physical opponent Onama has faced to date, particularly with his moving up from featherweight. Add in that Welshman’s durability lessens Onama’s probability of finding a knockout, and Jones figures to overwhelm the Glory MMA rep over the course of however long this fight lasts. The pick is Jones via second-round stoppage.
