UFC 165 “Jones vs. Gustafsson”
Sept. 21, 2013 | Toronto
All claims about this unforgettable tilt are justified, no matter which way you slice it. Some say Jones won. Others favor Gustafsson. All agree it was a fight for the ages.
For five rounds, these two light heavyweights took part in a war. The Swede’s performance stood out for many because he made a man who seemed unbeatable look average at times. Jones wore the battle wounds, sustaining a cut above his right eye and showing swelling around his mouth. The damage put his reign as champion in doubt entering the latter rounds. In the fourth, “Bones” went into overdrive, nearly finishing Gustafsson with an enthralling sequence of strikes. From knees to spinning elbows, Jones’ talents were on full display, but the challenger managed to hang on to see round five.
In the end, all three judges scored it for Jones. The result left some satisfied, others maddened. Jones and Gustafsson will meet again at UFC 178.
