2. “Bloodsport” (1988)
Everybody wanted to be Frank Dux in 1988. “Bloodsport” stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as Dux, an American soldier who accepts an invitation to compete in a Hong Kong martial arts tournament known as the Kumite. Dux befriends fellow American Ray Jackson (Donald Gibb) and draws the ire of defending champion Chong Li (Bolo Yeung) by breaking his tournament record for the fastest knockout. After Li injures and hospitalizes Jackson in a match, Dux sets out to avenge his friend and complete his run through a labyrinth of violence. While critics mostly frowned upon “Bloodsport,” it did well at the box office, earning a reported haul of $65 million on a limited budget. It has since become a cult hit.
