Chris Weidman has a problem with loyalty, at least as it pertains to United States mixed martial arts fans and their relationship with American fighters.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight titleholder took it upon himself to bemoan the lack of support on home soil, pointing to the Conor McGregor-Dustin Poirier pairing at UFC 178 on Sept. 27 in which the Irishman brought with him a boisterous crowd of countrymen at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It felt at times as if Poirier, a Louisianan who trains at American Top Team, was fighting in foreign territory.

“I feel like smaller countries, other countries, they cheer, they support their people no matter what,” Weidman said in a recent interview with The MMA Hour. “We need to get a little bit more supportive of our people.”
