The sport of boxing suffered another tragedy as yet another young, promising fighter has been murdered. Less than a week after undefeated welterweight contender Ed Brown (20-0, 16 KOs) was shot in the head near Kedzie Ave. and Warren Blvd. on the South Side of Chicago, Mexico’s Alejandro “Cobrita” Gonzalez Jr. was killed.
Gonzalez (25-3-3, 15 KOs) challenged Carl Frampton for the Irishman’s IBF super bantamweight title in July, 2015, and knocked the defending titlist down twice in the opening round. But Gonzalez was unable to build off that and wound up dropping a unanimous 12-round decision. Young “Cobrita” last fought in October, where he battled Hector Esnar Bobadilla to a 10-round draw.
