Javontae Starks vs. Samuel Figueroa

Round 1

Figueroa comes out in his southpaw stance, looking to brawl. The taller, lankier Starks keeps him at bay with the jab. Figueroa lands a decent left hook to the body but he’s warned for a low blow. Starks is in for a fight early as Figueroa is relentless with his pressure. Javontae tags him with a sharp jab, followed by and overhand right. Figueroa has slowed his roll with the pressure, looking now to jab to the body behind some bobbing and weaving. A short lead left by the Puerto Rican, but Starks takes it well. Another left by Figueroa with a minute left. Starks pops his foe with a sharp left hook as he comes in, his best punch thus far. A couple jabs from both welterweights close out a very close opening round. 10-9 Starks.

Round 2

They collide at the center of the ring with left hooks, but neither is clean. Figueroa walks into a straight right as he tries coming in, forcing him to reset his feet. Left hook body from the Floridian, followed by one to the head. Figueroa returns the favor with a right to the ribs, but Starks answers with another short left hook up top. Figueroa is tagged by a sneaky right cross at the midway point but he comes back with straight left to the gut. Starks pins his foe in the corner briefly and plugs away at the body before the Puerto Rican escapes. Huge laser of a right hand buckles Figueroa’s knees with 18 seconds left but he stays upright. Good two-way action at the bell. 10-9 Starks.

Round 3

Figueroa tosses out two overhand rights, but Starks blocks them both. Figueroa then plugs the taller man with a few shots downstairs, but referee Frank Santore warns him that they are low. Starks drills him with a massive right uppercut that snaps the Puerto Rican’s head back, but Figueroa storms back with a flurry. Terse toe-to-toe until Figueroa backs off. After resetting, Starks plants another vicious right on his melon, but Sammy takes it well. Starks rips a left uppercut into his foe’s guts, but Santore warns him, now, that it’s low. They trade some decent shots at the bell. 10-9 Starks.

Round 4

Figueroa unfurls a glancing overhand right to start the frame. Starks goes back to the jab before slamming a few more heavy shots to the midsection. Figueroa backs into a corner where he has to absorb several more hooks and uppercuts to the belly and ribs. The Puerto Rican goes with a wild right hook, only to be countered by a short right cross. Figueroa tags his foe with a left, and then follows it up with four more lefts to the head. They stand forehead-to-forehead late, with Starks getting the better of the exchanges. Very close round. 10-9 Figueroa.

Round 5

A couple of jabs and straight rights from Starks open the stanza, followed a few left hooks to the body. Figueroa goes into a shell before opening up with a counter. Starks is popped by a sharp right hook a minute in but he answers with a jab and chopping left hand. Figueroa goes with the jab briefly before he nails him with a sweeping right hook. A left from the Floridian and then a right by the Puerto Rican with a minute left. Some decent action late. A nasty left to the body from Figueroa, followed by a perfect one-two to close out the round. 10-9 Figueroa.

Round 6

Figueroa opens the round with the jab a few times before touching his foe with a left to the ribs. Starks backs him into a corner, but his volley of punches is mostly blocked. A few more hooks to the guts from the Puerto Rican and it seems like Starks is starting to wither at the midway point. Starks tosses out a few jabs but Figueroa is undaunted, getting inside with a right and left to the head. Hard jab from Figueroa with 35 seconds left and it rocks him. Starks quickly clears his head quickly but he can’t return the fire. It’s all Figueroa now. 10-9 Figueroa.

Round 7

Starks paws out a few jabs, but he’s countered by a nice left to the body. They clinch, where Figueroa rips a few uppercuts to the midsection. Starks pops his shorter foe with a sharp, short left hook at the midway point but Figueroa walks through it. A couple rangy jabs and then blasts Starks with a nice left to the face. Starks comes back with a couple of uppercuts during an exchange. Decent action late. Close round. 10-9 Figueroa.

Round 8

The fight is likely up for grabs coming into the final round. Figueroa storms out of his corner and looks to make it a brawl. Starks keeps him off with the jab, but the Puerto Rican is able to get inside and tear into the body. A series of right jabs and then a straight left by Figueroa, but Starks returns the favor with a combo on the inside. Right to the cranium from Starks, but Figueroa answers with a left up top. They stand in the pocket and rip into each other’s bodies before Figueroa nails his foe with a sizzling left to the face. Good action with about a minute left. Starks drives his fists into Figueroa’s intestines, but the Puerto Rican storms back with a powerful left to the dome. Good back-and-forth action at the bell. 10-9 Figueroa (77-73 Figeuroa).

Lydell Rhodes vs. Sergey Lipinets

Round 1

Rhodes paws with a few jabs, giving the Kazakhstani some awkward angles. Lipinets is following him slowly, looking for a spot to open up his attacks. Not much going on early as they continue to feel each other out. Rhodes tags him with a few more jabs at the midway point; Lipinets still hasn’t really let his hands go. A few shots to the body from Rhodes late. Lipinets, a former kickboxer, continues to walk after him before landing a decent counter right at the bell. 10-9 Rhodes.

Round 2

Rhodes paws with the jab while he circles, preventing his foe from finding a rhythm. They trade left hooks a minute in, but neither man is hurt. Rhodes tags him with a chopping right to the melon before moving away. Lipinets pins his foe in the ropes and digs a left and right to the body. Rhodes backs his foe up with a series of pawing jabs with a minute left. Rhodes sticks and moves well late. 10-9 Rhodes.

Round 3

Lipinets grazes the shorter American with a few rangy jabs, but he’s eventually countered by an overhand to the noggin. They exchange a few shots but Lipinets is the one who lands the better shot, a sweeping overhand right. Rhodes is back on his bike the jab, keeping Lipinets guessing. Rhodes is not engaging the Russian resident at all as Lipinets continues to stalk him down, unable to cut the ring off. Some decent jabs to the body for Lipinets late. 10-9 Lipinets.

Round 4

Rhodes flicks several jabs out to keep his foe away. Rhodes touches him with a few rights upstairs before escaping out to his left. Lipinets continues to follow him around like a zombie, unable to time the movement. A one-two by Rhodes with the midway point, but the Kazakh walks through it. The Las Vegas-based fighter is still moving well, keeping his chard-charging opponent off balance. Nice right to the grill by Rhodes at the bell. 10-9 Rhodes

Round 5

A triple jab from the American starts off the round. Lipinets continues to load up with single punches but he’s not able to keep his foe stationary in order to land them. Rhodes remains mobile, jabbing while moving to his left and right. Lipinets can’t figure out the tricky slickster as he simply walks in his direction. Lipinets finally lands a decent left hook with 25 seconds left but he can’t follow it up with anything. Rhodes gets his jab going again and closes out the round with it. 10-9 Rhodes.

Round 6

Lipinets eats a few jabs before missing a right and left hook. Rhodes pops him with a few playful jabs and then a right to the shoulder. Lipinets is much more assertive, but he still can’t figure out how to cut the ring off. Rhodes is everywhere with his footwork, pawing his jab out when he needs to. Hard right to the head by Lipinets, but Rhodes counters with a short left on the inside. A choppy overhand right by the Kazakh fighter with 45 seconds left and it seems to have shaken the American with 30 seconds left. Decent action late. 10-9 Lipinets.

Round 7

Rhodes fires off a few jabs to the head and body right away. Lipinets takes them but is unable to counter because Rhodes is gone. A short right to the head by the Las Vegas fighter. Lipinets has a clubbing right to the arm before unfurling a three-punch combo. Rhodes blocks the offense and then exits out to his right. Lipinets digs a right to the chest and then one to the stomach. Another. Rhodes doesn’t want any of it and gets back on his bike. Lipinets is chasing him down, trying to make it a brawl. Big straight right to the cantaloupe from the Kazakh fighter, but Rhodes takes it well. Good exchange late, capped by a left hook from Rhodes. 10-9 Lipinets.

Round 8

Rhodes fires off a pair of jabs to the head. Rhodes remains on his bike early as Lipinets walks after him, loading up on single shots. Overhand right by Sergey is mostly blocked, forcing a clinch. Lipinets digs a left to the body before they separate. Rhodes goes back to the jab, but Lipinets comes inside with a right to the belly. Right to the body from the Russian resident followed by an overhand right to the head. Rhodes backs off and takes it well, but he doesn’t exchange with his foe. 10-9 Lipinets.

Round 9

Lipinets storms out of his corner and presses the issue with his jab. Rhodes is quickly on his unicycle, not too eager to stand and trade. Lipinets lands a body shot on the groin and he’s warned for the infraction. Rhodes is given a brief rest period. They continue, and Rhodes is now on a motorcycle, not willing to engage at all. Lipinets simply chases after him, unable to throw more than single blows. A nice check hook from Rhodes, but Lipinets is unfazed and eventually pops him with an overhand right to the head. A hard hook to the body hurts Rhodes with a minute left and he’s looking to hang on. Lipinets plows him with a sizzling right to the temple and Rhodes’ knees turn to jelly. Lipinets is all over him and drills him with another right to the noggin. Rhodes stays afloat and survives the round. 10-9 Lipinets

Round 10

The fight likely hinges on this round. Lipinets tags his foe with a nice right to the head immediately into the frame. The American avoids a right and left before tying his opponent up. Lipinets is stalking him down, looking for the knockout. Rhodes remains in full retreat mode, refusing to engage. A left to the body, followed by a right to the head by the Kazakh fighter. A hard right to the melon wobbles Rhodes with 75 seconds left. Lipinets is all over him, pounding to the body and head. Rhodes is in deep trouble with 50 seconds left and is retreating. Sergey drills him with a right to the head and scorching left hook to the body. Rhodes ties him up and falls down. Out of nowhere, referee James Warring deducts a point from the American for holding even though he never warned him beforehand. Rhodes continues and eats a few more shots before surviving the round. 10-8 Lipinets (96-93 Lipinets).

Gervonta Davis vs. Cristobal Cruz

Round 1

A nice jab from Davis out of the southpaw stance, followed by a straight left to the head. A few shots to the body for Davis, forcing Cruz to tie up and then slug to the body in return. Lead left to the face from the Baltimore native but Cruz takes it. The Mexican tags him with a nice left up top, followed by a thudding right to the body. Straight left explodes on Cruz’ face and his down. He barely gets up at the count of nine and continues. Davis swarms him, looking to end it, but Cruz is too crafty and survives the round. 10-8 Davis.

Round 2

A few jabs from Davis early as Cruz is very tentative to let his hands go. A right to the head, followed by a left to the body from Davis. Cruz ducks down and walks into a left uppercut, rattling his bones. A huge left hook from Davis lands directly on the Mexican’s groin and he is down. After a few moments, Cruz is up and ready to go. Cruz digs a few hooks to the body but Gervonta comes back with a flurry in return. Good two-way action with a minute left, but Davis is obviously more powerful. Cruz is rocked by a left and right to the head with 25 seconds left, but he stays afloat. 10-9 Davis.

Round 3

Quite a bit of posturing between the two before Cruz opens up with a loopy overhand right. Cruz clip his foe with a right and then two lefts to the chin, but Davis takes it. Davis sets his feet and floors the Mexican with a huge left hook. Cruz barely gets up and is on extremely wobbly legs. Referee Frank Santore asks him a few times if he’s good to go, but Cruz is finished. Santore waives it off.

Tony Thompson vs. Malik Scott

Round 1

Thompson slowly comes out of his corner with the jab form his southpaw stance. Scott is very mobile early, trying to stick and move. Two rights to the head by Scott a minute in. Referee Frank Santore quickly warns both men for talking trash. Scott pegs him with another right to the mouth, but Thompson takes it well. They clinch a few times with a minute left in between a few rights up top from Malik. Very little action thus far. They clinch a few more times just before the bell. 10-9 Scott.

Round 2

Scott lands a glancing overhand right early on top of a slow jab from the taller Thompson. Scott backs away and circles around before landing a sweeping right to the head. Thompson continues to plod forward, pawing with a jab here and there. They clinch a few times midway through. Scott is warned sternly for hitting on the break. A couple of rights through the guard for Malik before being tied up. A few rights upstairs for Scott late. 10-9 Scott.

Round 3

Scott quickly tags his foe with a lead right up top. A chopping left to the head from Malik comes next as Thompson is plodding along. Scott is pinned in a corner, but he counters a combo with a left hook to the noggin. Thompson backs off, possibly shaken, but Scott doesn’t follow it up with anything. A few slow-motion shots to the body from Thompson, only to get countered a short right cross. Tony takes a left hook to the body late. 10-9 Scott.

Round 4

Thompson is slightly more active early, throwing about five punches in the first 30 seconds. Scott remains mobile, moving side to side behind his pesky jab. Scott backs into the ropes and then counters a left to the body with a flurry upstairs. A decent left to the face from the D.C. fighter, but Malik is unfazed. Scott goes to the head and body late. Very little action until the bell. 10-9 Scott.

Round 5

Scott paws with the jab a few times as he moves to his left. Thompson can’t catch him, though, as he eats a few more jabs for good measure. They clinch, but Malik digs five straight rights to the body. They tie up a few more times at the midway point before Scott tags his foe with a right cross. Thompson ties him up again, but the Philly fighter breaks free and digs a left to the ribs. Decent combo to the head and body from Malik at the bell. 10-9 Scott.

Round 6

A few jabs from Scott, but Thompson counters with a nice right and left upstairs. Thompson presses his foe into the ropes and digs a right to the ribs. Scott bounces away and the goes with the jab. Sharp counter right cross by Malik but Thompson isn’t going anywhere. They clinch a few times. Scott goes to the body and then with a right to the face. They clinch again. Thompson misses a left hook and then stumbles into the ropes. A couple of good shots by both late. 10-9 Thompson.

Round 7

Scott pops him with a right and left, but Thompson counters with a nice right to the jaw early. Thompson is much more active early, trying to pressure his foe into the ropes to slug away at the body. A double left hook upstairs from Malik, but Thompson isn’t bothered by them. The Philly fighter clips his foe with a sweeping left hook at the midway point and then follows it up with jabs. They clinch repeatedly but Scott tags him with a nice left-right to the head late. 10-9 Scott.

Round 8

A Scott flurry to the body is largely blocked but Thompson doesn’t counter him. Very slow going early in the round Thompson slowly plods along, trying to pin his foe into the ropes. Scott continues to move behind his jab, playing it safe. Santore allows them to clinch several times late, leaving the crowd in weary silence. 10-9 Scott.

Round 9

Much of the same continues into the ninth. Scott is moving well and flicking out the jab when he needs. Thompson walks forward, his hands down, tossing out a few shots here and there. Out of nowhere, a huge right to the jaw floors Scott and he is hurt badly. He gets up and is extremely wobbly with 45 seconds left. Thompson comes to life, looking for the knockout. He can’t do it and Scott survives the round. 10-8 Thompson.

Round 10

Scott is on his bike right away, still not totally cleared from the previous round. Thompson lands a few solid shots to the body. Scott wants nothing to do with any exchanges as he is moving side-to-side with a desperate jab. Thompson isn’t super aggressive, but he is trying to pin his foe down to land some hard punches. With a minute left, Thompson still likely needs a knockout in order to win. Scott is very mobile. Scott remains on his bike, keeping a very safe distance. Thompson can’t track him down before the bell. 10-9 Thompson (96-93 Scott).
