His UFC tenure, and his MMA career for that matter, may not be anything to write home about. However, Vinny Magalhaes did come through with the most sensational and shocking moment of the first day on the mats in Barcelona.
The TUF 8 alum turned in a strong performance in his opening round bout, leglocking Rodrigo "Cavaca" Henriques. However, coming into his 99-kilogram quarter-final against Marcio "Pe De Pano" Cruz, he was a considerable underdog and it was unclear how exactly Magalhaes would go about exploiting the 2003 divisional champ. Just seconds into their bout, "Pezao" responded by hitting a picture-perfect flying armbar from the tie-up that instantly flashed shock across the face of "Pe de Pano" before he even tapped.
Flying armbars are certainly nothing new at ADCC, from Baret Yoshida on Wellington Dias, to Ricco Rodriguez on Yoshiaki Yatsu, to Leonardo Santos on Georges St. Pierre to Hannette Staack Quadros on Rosangela Conceicao. However, they seldom come against elite grapplers with tons of gi or no-gi experience, let alone one of the best heavyweight grapplers of all time like "Pe de Pano."
