The stage is officially set for the biggest fight in boxing in the first half of 2017. Unbeaten WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman will square off against WBC 147-pound titlist Danny Garcia in the main event of Showtime Championship Boxing on CBS, presented by Premier Boxing Champions. At Friday’s weigh-ins, both titans cleared weight, giving their mega fight the green light.
Philadelphia’s Garcia (33-0, 19 KOs), a former WBC and WBA super lightweight champ, won his welterweight title by out-pointing Robert Guerrero last January and he looks to hold onto his belt Saturday night. “Swift” weighed in officially at 146.5 pounds, clearing the final hurdle toward the biggest fight of his career.
Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) has been considered among the best of the young lions in the sport for years and is coming off a Fight of the Year candidate in beating Shawn Porter last June. He also bested Guerrero for his title back in march of 2015 and has defended it twice. “One Time” came in at 146.25 pounds.
The co-feature will see Erickson Lubin, who weighed 153.75, taking on Jorge Cota, who weighed the same, in a junior middleweight title eliminator. The action will go live on CBS from inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
