Deep Postpones ‘Mayhem in Macau’

Four days before it was to occur, Japanese promotion Deep has announced the postponement of its first-ever show in China.

In a Tuesday press release, Deep cited poor ticket sales and a lack of time to promote the event as the reasons for the rescheduling of “Mayhem in Macau,” which was set to take place on Jan. 8 at The Venetian Macau’s Venetian Arena. The promotion stated that a new date for the show will be announced, but no time frame was given.

The card would have been the first of Deep’s 10th anniversary year and was slated to feature two of the company’s champions -- bantamweight kingpin Masakazu Imanari and welterweight ace Yuya Shirai -- as well as a bout for the vacant megaton title between Kazuhisa Tazawa and Yuji Sakuragi. Also included on the bill were former middleweight champ Ryuta Sakurai, “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 competitor Andy Wang, and female standout Saori Ishioka.

Update: Hours after canceling “Mayhem in Macau,” Deep has announced that its first event of 2011, “52 Impact,” will take place on Feb. 25 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.
